When to Kite-Surf in Mui Ne?

Mui Ne is known as the place in Vietnam that has the most favorable conditions for wind and water sports. This means that, averagely, in Mui Ne you can enjoy more than 200 days of wind over 12 knots. How many days of amazing wind you’ll be able to experience depends mostly on the season.

On the one hand, high season, which is also known as dry season, lasts from November to March and it’s ideal for kite-surfing. Although the regular wind intensity is 18 to 30 knots, this season can also bring you the wind of up to 40 knots. To make sure you’re ideally equipped for these conditions, make sure to bring a kite whose size is between 7 and 12 m.

On the other hand, low season lasting from April to October is a more peaceful part of the year. Not only are there fewer tourists, but the wind is also milder and more unpredictable. However, this season still can bring you some nice kite-surfing conditions. Just make sure to have a 9 to 14-meter kite in order to have a good experience.

The water temperature in Mui Ne has no dramatic oscillations. It goes from a pleasant 20 to 25 degrees which makes it pretty enjoyable for all kinds of activities. If you hit the beach in no-wind periods, you’ll be able to enjoy peaceful, flat waters, while windy conditions make it more turbulent, depending on their intensity. Accordingly, Mui Ne can be a great place for kite-surfing for both beginners and experienced surfers.

Where to kite-surf in Mui Ne?

Depending on your preferences, you can enjoy various kite-surfing places in Mui Ne. Each of them has its advantages and the most popular ones are:

  • Mui Ne Main Beach, which is the ideal choice for beginners since it’s considered the safest area;
  • The Cemetery, with cross onshore wind direction, reserved only for the extremely experienced surfers since it’s considered a dangerous area owed to the rocky terrain and large swells;
  • Turtle Island, with cross onshore wind direction, that may offer you both moderate winds and swells, depending on weather conditions. It is the furthest spot in the town but its main advantage is the fact that it’s not as crowded as other kite-surfing areas.

Important Tips to Remember

First of all, before kite-surfing in Mui Ne, you should obligatorily apply high-factor sun cream and wear reliable eye protection, to avoid sunburns or other unpredicted discomforts.

Additionally, if you get stung by a jellyfish (which doesn’t really happen frequently), don’t freak out!  The jellyfish in Mui Ne are not dangerous and the pain can be relieved by treating the hurt area with some vinegar.

Finally, if you’re not sure whether you’re good enough to surf on your own, don’t hesitate to visit any of the local kite-surfing schools and ask for professional help and some training. For a relatively small amount of money, you’ll gain the confidence and skills needed to enjoy this adventurous activity.
